Browser hangs on login page - often with "Processing" box showing

Article created: Mar 10 2011, updated: Mar 10 2011

Background:  A browser with the "Google Chrome Frame" installed inside Internet Explorer provides special rendering capabilities for certain web sites. As it turns out, it also confuses Crash Magic v2 thru 3.3.21 into thinking it is running the Chrome browser.

Status:  Bug - with workaround and upgrade
Keywords:  hang,processing,frozen,stopped
Categories:   *Errors / crashes*

Explanation:

When a browser contacts a web server, such as CrashMagic, it sends a piece of text identifying it's capabilities.  It also includes the type of browser.  (i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari, Chrome, etc.) If a browser has the Google Chrome Frame addon installed,  It will return a piece of text such as the following: "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; GTB6.4; chromeframe/10.0.648.127; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; MS-RTC LM 8; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; InfoPath.2; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E)"  Crash Magic, which is simply looking for the text "chrome", interprets that as meaning that you have a Google Chrome browser and begins sending commands that the Chrome browser would understand.  Unfortunately, you are in an Internet Explorer browser, which doesn't understand those commands.

CrashMagic should be looking for "chrome" without "chromeframe".  After version 3.3, this problem is corrected and should function properly with the Chrome Frame Plugin.

As we are investigating the best way to parse this information, here are the values returned from a variety of browsers.  You can check your browser by visiting http://research.pdmagic.com
