Using Texas TRASER 5.05 with Intersection Magic

Article created: May 06 2004, updated: May 06 2004

Background:  TRASER is a program written many years ago at Texas A&M. This article describes the process for using TRASER and Intersection Magic together.

Status:  Info - "how to" article

Categories:   *Configuration*

Explanation:

The TRASER program is owned and supported by Data Nexus Inc.

Pd' Programming and Data Nexus can work with you to arrange the best possible solution for your crash data analysis needs.

Instructions for users of the Traser software program in Texas who would like to export the data to the Intersection Magic software program.

History:

The Traser program sold by Texas A&M until several years ago is an MS DOS based program which provides data entry for police departments and traffic engineering departments. The data that Traser stores includes Crash, Citation, Arrest, Streets, and Officer. This program is no longer supported by Texas A&M and further development and support of the program appears unlikely.

Correction: See note at top of page. Data-Nexus is supporting and developing software for TRASER users.

Intersection Magic is capable of importing much of the data relevant to traffic engineers directly from the Traser program’s output. The Traser program is capable of exporting its data to an ASCII file format. In the last version of Traser to be released, (v5.05) a utility was included specifically for users in Texas to export their crash record data. This routine can not be used to export the other database tables in the system. Fortunately, the only data that Intersection Magic needs is the Crash data tables.

Note: While the utility program written for Texas users makes the export of Crash data easy, there are ways to export specific data from the Traser program. This includes information from the other data tables, as well as the export of data from non-Texas databases. This document does not cover that procedure.

Pd’ Programming has made every effort to keep this document accurate and complete, but please bear in mind that we are not the authors of the Traser program, and we have prepared this information without the assistance of Texas A&M.

The process:

1. There is a program in your Traser50 directory called T50ASCMN.EXE. This utility program shipped with the latest version of Traser released. (v5.05) If you do not have this utility installed, check to see if perhaps the diskettes were received but never installed. Without this utility, the process of exporting data is more complex and out of the scope of this document. Run the program by typing T50ASCMN and . Log in as you would to the Traser program:

Select the ASCII Conversion menu and the ASCII Layout List option. Select Y to the prompt about "Format Value Range". (we’re not sure what this is, but it works this way):

3. This screen will be presented indicating that the crash data format has been specified. It also indicates that a log file has been created which contains the format of the data. Note where this log file is placed, and be sure to keep a copy of this log file available for anyone who tries to use the data.

 ATTENTION: Process Complete. CRA- MAIN

Once this data format file has been created, you are ready to export data. From what we can tell, this first process only needs to be done once. But if you have problems with the ASCII data, by all means try doing the entire process each time you export.

Select the ASCII conversion menu again, and this time select the Database à ASCII file option.

The next step allows the user to specify the name of the file to be created (the ASCII file). It also allows several other options to be set. You may choose any dates, but the rest of the information should be as shown below. (you may use a different file name if you desire)

At this point, the program will begin exporting data. When the process is complete, the user will be presented with the following screen. We’re not exactly sure what’s happening here. The program is prompting for either P/Printer, O/Port or A/Accept. Since the export process has already occurred, we enter "A".

It appears that printing is the intended next step of the process. At this point, we simply press to stop a print from occurring. Again, since the data has already been exported, this seems harmless.

That’s it! This screen indicates that the export process is completed. It also indicates the name of the log file that was created. Press the enter key to return to the main screen. Then press F10 to exit the program.

The file that was created (c:\magic\data\rawdata.del in this case) is the source data file for Intersection Magic. This file is an ASCII comma-delimited file containing several different record types labeled A through F.

Pd’ Programming has created an import definition file (TRAS.IML) which understands how to read and parse this Traser export file. Please look in the Intersection Magic manual or contact Pd’ Programming for more information on importing this data file.
