Removing IMW to prepare for a fresh installation
Article created: Aug 08 2003, updated: Aug 08 2003
Over time, computers tend to gather lots of old, unused information. It can often be desireable to completely erase and reinstall a program. This article provides tips for uninstalling Intersection Magic as completely as possible to prepare for a new installation.
Info - "how to" article
*Installation and setup*
By default, Intersection Magic is installed to c:\magic and support/configuration files are installed to c:\magic\data. However, the person installing the program may choose different, even multiple locations.
Also, the uninstall program is designed not to delete any files that it did not install/create during installation.
For this reason, it is helpful to know what files to look for when preparing to delete the program.
Note: It is rare that one must perform this process, but many computer users (like myself) like to have a good handle on exactly what is and isn't on their system. This article is for them!
The first place to start is by running the uninstall option. Under the control panel, add/remove software, you will find Intersection Magic. If this entry still exists after running the uninstall, run it again in case multiple installations were done.
The uninstaller will not delete files that can't be replaced.
The next thing to do is to insert an installation CD and run the "Create backup configuration" option. This option will copy configuration files, reports, filters, and charts, and generally do it's best to identify files that can not be replaced.
After uninstalling and creating a backup configuration, follow the remaining steps below to delete files and folders related to Interesection Magic.
The Intersection Magic program executable is called imw.exe. Search for this file to find all the program files. Program files are all replaceable. They are generally found in a folder called MAGIC. Scan this folder before deleting files,
but under most circumstances, all files in this folder are provided with the installation and are not customized.
Below the MAGIC folder are BONUS,DEMO,GIS,MASTER and SQLBAT. These are also folders that are installed with the program.
These can be deleted
If an IMLOCAL folder exists on your local hard drive, this is an indication that a network installation exists. You may wish to follow these steps on your network drives as well.
Other folders under the MAGIC or IMLOCAL folder are usually named DATA, or some representation of your configuration name (i.e. SWIT, DENV, PHOE, PALO, etc) These are the folders to examine most closely. To start, these folder will contain several other folders:
ARA - contain schematics. Unless you've been creating custom schematics,
this folder will be replaced with a new installation.
CHARTS - contain charts. The program ships with several charts, but
any new charts you've created will be in this folder, examine it carefully before deleting it.
WINPDS - contain scripts. Unless you've been writing custom scripts,
this folder will be replaced with a new installation.
Files found in this folder include your configuration files, which should be preserved, as well as change streets files, filters, reports, and text files.
Examine these files before deleting them. They generally can not be replaced.
(note: log files also appear here. Anything with the extension .log is for your information only, and may be deleted safely.
After following the above steps, Intersection Magic should be all but gone from your system. However, since users often make backup copies of data or folders on their hard disks, it can be handy to know some file extentions that are unique to Intersection Magic.
Note: While we don't know of other software packages using these extentions, you should only delete files that you can positively identify as belonging to Intersection Magic
*.luc - these are lookup files. Generally there will be other configuration files wherever you find these.
imw.* - these are program files. Generally there will be other program files, like executables, help files and dll files where you find these.
????ACC.DAT - these are database files. The complete set of database files are defined as: ????ACC.* + ????STR.* and ????CRS.*. Only delete these files if you know this is an unused database, or if you intend to re-import all of your data.
At this point, you may wish to empty your recycle bin to be sure all traces of these files are gone.
If you intend to erase your database and start with a fresh one, be sure to backup data from Intersection Magic that is not part of the crash records that you import. That is, when you create a new database and import your ASCII data, it will not include some data that you have prepared in Intersection Magic.
. If you have a volume data file, copy it to a location from which you can retrieve it later. Record that filename.
. Use utilities / database / streets manager / streets layout / export ASCII to create an ASCII file containing any cross street orderings you have done in the program. Save this file to a location from which you can retrieve it later. Record that filename.
. Use utilities / database / streets manager / export streets. Set the dialog as shown below and click OK to produce a listing that can be re-imported into the program. Record that filename.
Obtain a copy of the data to be imported
. This is the data that you import periodically. This time, make sure that it contains as many years of data as you wish to have for analysis.
When you create a new database you can then restore this data. After importing your crash records: Restore the aliases using utilities / database / streets manager / street aliases / add / list. Restore the cross streets using utilities / database / streets manager / streets layout / import ASCII.
Armed with this information, you should be able to safely remove all traces of Intersection Magic from your system.
